Westminster Guide:
Although Westminster is an area in London, it is sometimes considered a city in its own right. It has housed both the royal and parliamentary governments for some 900 years. Despite its many historical and cultural attractions it has much of a modern element to it and there is much to see and do within the area.
Things to see and do in Westminster
The Palace of Westminster, which also includes Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament is one of the finest attractions of the area. It is possible to attend the Mother of Parliaments when a session is being conducted or enter the public gallery when the House is sitting at set times. Through this you can get a great idea of the internal architecture of the buildings. Guided tours are also available for when parliament is not sitting and these tend to last 75 minutes.
Westminster Abbey is popular with tourists and worshippers alike although a fee is charged for tourist entry. You can attend church service free of charge and appreciate the talented choir.
The Banqueting House is another attraction although it is a little more difficult to plan a trip there as it can be shut down at short notice for Government affairs. It has been designed by Inigo Jones in his Neo-Classical way, and is very much admired by all those who understand the intricacy of its architecture. Its paintings are also second to none and it is remembered for being the place where Charles I was executed in 1649 after the English Civil War.
Visit the Cabinet War Rooms which are a part of the Imperial War Museum. Here the underground corridors and rooms have been maintained. This was where the war against Hitler was directed by Churchill and it remains in almost exactly the same state as it was in 1945. the Churchill Museum which has now been attached to it since 2004 is one of its kind in being completely dedicated to the life of Sir Winston Churchill, who has won the title of ‘Greatest Briton’ in recent times.
Visit St Margaret’s Church, located next to Abbey and the parish church for the House of Commons.
The residences of the Prime Minister and Chancellor are located on Downing Street (No. 10 and 11).
